Honeycomb: The World Beyond Honeycomb Troubleshooting
Boot the Steam demo, survive UE5 crashes, and stop wasting a timed session on a black screen.
The Honeycomb: The World Beyond Steam demo (app 2959440) opened on August 31, 2026, and the discussion hub filled with the same three tickets: the client will not start, Unstuck does nothing, and the session ended while someone was still in a menu. This page is the field kit. It is not Frozen Way support. Pair it with system requirements, controls, and the demo walkthrough. Send logs to the pinned Steam threads collected on links.
Confirm you are on the right build
The full game is still upcoming on September 8, 2026. If Steam shows the main app (1510440) as locked, download the demo module. Do not wait for a console trial unless Frozen Way announces one. This guide assumes Windows PC, Unreal Engine 5, and a store install on an SSD. Recheck the live spec block on system requirements if a patch moved a GPU line.
Will not start, crash on launch, or fatal error
Steam players repeatedly recovered a silent or instant crash with a launch option:
- Steam library → Honeycomb demo → Properties → Launch Options.
- Add
-dx11exactly like that, including the dash. - Boot once with overlays off (Discord, NVIDIA, Steam FPS).
- If it lives, leave
-dx11on until you have a Valley save. Then try a clean boot without it and compare.
Why it works: recommended specs list DirectX 12; minimum lists 11. UE5 titles on mixed driver stacks often die in D3D12 init and survive 11. This is a test, not a graphics flex. After a stable boot, read graphics settings before you turn on DLSS 4.5, Multi Frame Generation, or RTXDI.
Also check:
- Install disk. Minimum already says SATA SSD; recommended NVMe. A spinning drive will look like a hang.
- RAM. Eight gigabytes is the floor. Close Chrome-class browsers before the first boot.
- Verify integrity in Steam if the unpack looks short of 40 GB.
- 13th/14th-gen Intel machines had UE5 crash notes in older Frozen Way demo posts. BIOS extra OC off is the first experiment, not a new GPU.
Black screen, stuck on video, or infinite settings
A subset of demo threads describe a startup movie or settings panel that never yields the planet. Try in this order:
- Alt-Enter once in case the splash is off-screen on a multi-monitor desk.
- Disable fullscreen optimizations on the
.exe(Windows compatibility tab) and boot windowed. - Kill overlays again. They love splash movies.
- Add
-dx11if you have not already. - Confirm the GPU driver is a Game Ready / Adrenalin package from this year, not a clean-install leftover.
If the desktop never returns, hold power, then boot with -dx11 before you reinstall. Reinstall last. Logs first.
Unstuck does not unstuck
Community posts after August 31 are blunt: the unstuck command sometimes leaves you in the same rock. Do not treat it as a teleport. Practical rules:
- Stay near the landing pod until you know the geometry.
- Avoid magnetite-looking deposits and thin cave lips until you have a base.
- Death already drops some inventory and returns you to base. That is the reliable reset, documented in survival.
- If you are wedged in a build piece, delete the piece from planning mode if the UI still responds. See base building.
File a screenshot on Frozen Way’s demo bug thread. “Unstuck bad” without a location is noise.
Session timer: two hours or a quest gate
Marketing blurbs said “about one hour of gameplay.” The Steam demo news post is stricter: each session ends after two hours of playtime or a main-quest milestone, whichever comes first. Starting a new game resets the timer. You can restart as often as you like. AFK still counts. That is why some players hit the wall while reading a plant tooltip.
Play plan:
- Treat the first run as a 60-minute exam even if the cap is 120. Follow the route on the demo walkthrough.
- If you want a second lab, start a new game instead of arguing with the clock.
- The Pass is not a demo destination. Official surveys call it extreme, end-of-progression. Read biomes instead of racing there.
Middle mouse, missing binds, and “I cannot scan”
Several players bounced because a radial or sample action sat on middle mouse. If your mouse has no working wheel-click:
- Open the mapper before you leave the pod.
- Move scan, tool radial, and sample onto keys you physically have.
- Duplicate scan onto keyboard if the UI allows two binds.
Full details live on controls. This is a buy-blocker for some people and a two-minute fix for others. Do the two minutes.
What to send Frozen Way
Useful tickets include GPU model, VRAM, OS build, whether -dx11 was on, whether DLSS/RTXDI was on, and a DxDiag or crash folder. Useless tickets are “Snail scam” and “needs combat.” The studio pinned a troubleshooting guide, a demo feedback thread, and a bug thread on the Steam hub. Use those URLs from links.
After a successful boot, go back to getting started and actually scan something. A fixed client with no database entries is still a wasted session. When September 8 unlocks, keep this page for the first-day crash wave, then let the Updates Hub take patch notes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Honeycomb will not start. What is the first fix?
Add `-dx11` in Steam launch options, install on an SSD, and confirm system requirements. Then read the rest of this page.
How long is a demo session?
Steam’s demo post: two hours of playtime or a main-quest milestone, whichever first. A new game resets the timer. The demo walkthrough still plans a tight first hour.
Unstuck failed. Am I soft-locked?
Often yes until you die and respawn at base. See survival. Report the spot on Steam; do not keep stacking on the same lip.
Where do I send logs?
Pinned Steam troubleshooting, feedback, and bug threads. The links page holds the hub. This wiki does not take attachments.
